Hidden Quality Part 4 - Dashboard Instruments
The original SL classics have captivating dashboards that feature a stunning array of analogue instruments. In this edition of Hidden Quality we delve into how each instrument is reborn.
Compared to the endless lights and beeps of today's digital dashboards, the analogue instruments of the original SL classics are more than a relief.
The style of these instruments adds an elegance and beauty to the car - a distinctive aura of class that is often overlooked in the pursuit of progress.
We cherish these instruments and ensure that they are not only visually perfect, but also function at their best.
Each instrument is removed from the dashboard along with their cables and the various transducers that monitor the car's performance metrics.
Yet this is just the beginning of the restoration. Each instrument is then further dismantled to its constituent parts.
Above, a freshly painted dashboard awaits the reborn instruments. Below, the pristine restoration of the undercarriage includes a new speedometer cable amongst others.
With fresh chrome, a new face and replacement glass, each instrument is ready to be hand-fitted.
Some instruments have status lights, such as the centre cluster on a W113. Of course these bubs are replaced with new along with their fuses.
Hidden from view is a vast array of period transducers required to measure the performance metrics of the car.
For example, an actual oil tube is routed the Oil Pressure meter while the fuel gauge uses a variable floating resistor to indicate levels. Each transducer is rebuilt or replaced to ensure accurate readings
Certainly, the beauty of the dashboard is on full display for each car that is reborn at Hemmels. However, we are equally proud of the restoration effort behind each instrument.
Next time you see the dashboard of a Hemmels classic take a moment to consider the Hidden Quality that we pour into making every instrument not only look superb, but also function accurately.
